True Grit: Owen D. Pomery
Aesthetically minded cycling magazine Rouleur took “True Grit” as the topic for issue 102, celebrating the hardiest of riders, their determination and perseverance. As the issue and feature story, an interview with Australian cyclist and adventurer Lachlan Morton, took shape the design team looked to Owen D. Pomery to create the cover image and illustrations to accompany theĀ interview.
“I already knew Owen Pomery and the dioramas he makes, and I had been wanting to do something with him for a while.” – Enric Adell, Art Director.
Lachlan’s stories of his favourite rides across all kinds of terrain from all corners of the globe provided the perfect vehicle to commission Owen’s signature isometric dioramas. Each vignette is a visual analysis of the landscape and terrain of legendary rides from Yorkshire to Utah, serving as the ideal accompaniment to Lachlan’s words.
When it came to the cover art the art director had already seen an illustration by Owen that he knew would work, it just needed a slight adaptation to go from day to night and replace the cowboys with an intrepid cyclist. The finished cover reflects the adventurous spirit of not only Lachlan’s cycling stories but of all the riders featured in the issue.
