Owen D. Pomery x Bluesky

Social media platform Bluesky were looking for an illustration to welcome users to their site and give an initial visual for anyone who downloads the app. Wanting to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere art director Darrin Loegiler sought out Owen D. Pomery for his beautifully crafted hand drawn illustrations.

Owen was briefed to create an illustration that reflected the platform’s optimistic outlook; an image that was warm, inviting and human, communicating the social aspect with a busy scene of people gathering.

The final illustration blends many strands of Owen’s work, alongside some personal interests:

 ‘It was great to work on a scene with so many different characters all interacting in one space. It was also nice to work on such a human image, but still getting to include some slightly sci-fi elements in the background buildings. Of course, I always love to include a kiosk and people playing petanque if I can, too! The biggest challenge was creating an illustration that worked in the various different crops and orientations when experienced in different locations, while still being one coherent image.’

Once the illustration was finalised the Bluesky team requested a night time version for the dark mode version of the app, bathing the scene and characters in atmospheric lamp lights and filling the sky with stars. Can you spot any other differences?
