Now Representing Mia Angioy
We’re very excited to be welcoming collage and interdisciplinary collage artist and graphic designer, Mia Angioy to the Brilliants Artists roster!
Combining her love of music, graphic design and artistic influences from the Dada movement, Mia remixes found imagery with digital and analogue techniques to create energetic and vibrant collage works. She enjoys working across a range of industries, including music, fashion, and sports.
We caught up with Mia to find out a little more about her inspirations, life as a collage artist and work to date…
1. Do you listen to music while you create? And if so, who or what gets the most plays in your studio?
Almost always. I listen to a lot of different music when I work, and if it’s not music it’ll be a podcast. If I’m working on something music related then I’ll listen to the songs of that artist. I also listen to a lot of hip hop, rnb, electronic, rock and soul music while I’m working. Anything goes!
2. Which other illustrators or artists do you most admire and why?
Dada artists like Hannah Höch are a big inspiration, I just love her work and they’re one of the reasons I started to collage. Alice Isaac, she’s an amazing artist and supported me a lot during the early stages of my career. Also collage artists Jimmy Turrell and Georgia Pedley, and many more!
3. What is the best thing about being an creator? And the worst?
The best thing is how it allows me to do what I’m passionate about as a job. The worst is probably the imposter syndrome that comes with it…
4. How do you overcome a creative block?
I’m still figuring this out, but I’d say taking time away from the work and focusing on something else for a while. Mindfulness, being out in nature, going for a walk. Then you can come back to the work with fresh eyes. I also think it’s important to not overthink the creative process, let it happen naturally.
5. What are 3 of your favourite films? Which one would you illustrate the poster for?
It’s hard to choose 3 but I’d maybe say Into The Wild, Goodfellas, The Departed. It would be cool to reimagine all of those posters!
6. If you could work on the book cover for one book, which would it be?
Non-fiction: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Fiction: Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart.
7. Dream studio location and set up?
Barcelona! I feel like I would be constantly inspired there. High ceilings, big windows with a nice view and lots of natural lighting. Full of inspiring artwork and plenty of space to get messy with collage and mixed media.
8. Best trip you have ever been on?
Probably Primavera Sound festival in 2022. The line up was incredible. We spent the week in Barcelona for the festival then flew to Paris afterwards.
9. What do you have to have in place before you start work?
1. A clean, tidy workspace really helps me feel focused and ready to work. I can’t work with clutter! 2. Coffee!
10. If you could have any artwork in your home what would it be?
Probably an original painting by Picasso or Joan Miró.
